FEB 13, 2023: ANNIVERSARY OF THE PASSING OF BEATA MARIA LÚCIA
NAME: Lúcia de Jesus dos Santos
BORN: March 22, 1907 in Aljustrel, Portugal
DEPARTED: February 13, 2005, Coimbra, Portugal
A recently updated article in Encyclopedia Britannica, describes Beata Lúcia in this way:
“a Portuguese shepherd girl, later a Carmelite nun, who claimed she saw visions of the Virgin Mary in 1917 at Fátima, Portugal, which subsequently became one of the most famous Marian shrines in the world. [https://fatima.pt/en] The first of six visions came to Lucia on May 13, 1917, while she was tending sheep with her two cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto.”1
The World of Marian Apparitions, by Wincenty Laszewski further states that Sister Lúcia,
“was the main witness to the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1917, when she was ten years old. In 1924, she joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Dorothy, and in 1948, she entered the Carmelite Order. She resided at the Carmelite convent in Coimbra until the age of ninety-seven.” (pg. 70)
It then adds:
Some people think that God wanted to keep her on earth until the Church had responded to all the requests made at Fátima. But Our Lady had made another request: to spread the Five First Saturdays Devotion throughout the whole world.”

Laszewski’s book also argues that, “In 2005, the First Saturdays devotion began to spread throughout the Church following two major deaths: those of Sister Lúcia and Pope St. John Paul II.”2

“In 1917 no one could have imagined all this: the three pastorinhos of Fatima see, listen and remember, and Lucia, the surviving witness, commits it all to paper when ordered to do so by the Bishop of Leiria and with Our Lady's permission.”3
For the beatification and canonization, a miracle must be approved, attributed to the intercession of the Venerable or Blessed, respectively. Share with others materials on Beata Lúcia here and encourage others to read her story, to understand why Our Lady asked her and St. Jacinta / St. Francisco to pray the Rosary every day:
