Praying the Rosary is particularly powerful when we engage in meditation on each mystery. It is quite amazing to think that in pondering on the mysteries of the Rosary we are quite directly copying Our Lady’s example. In Luke’s Gospel we are told that Mary treasured up all the things that happened to her, and pondered on them in her heart. She quite evidently meditated on the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation in the Temple and the Finding in the Temple. There is no reason to imagine that she would not have continued to ponder on so many more events from the life of her Son. We keep her company when we meditate in this way, and immerse ourselves in her own interior world.1

Announcing each mystery
29. Announcing each mystery, and perhaps even using a suitable icon to portray it, is as it were to open up a scenario on which to focus our attention. The words direct the imagination and the mind towards a particular episode or moment in the life of Christ. In the Church's traditional spirituality, the veneration of icons and the many devotions appealing to the senses, as well as the method of prayer proposed by Saint Ignatius of Loyola in the Spiritual Exercises, make use of visual and imaginative elements (the compositio loci), judged to be of great help in concentrating the mind on the particular mystery. This is a methodology, moreover, which corresponds to the inner logic of the Incarnation: in Jesus, God wanted to take on human features. It is through his bodily reality that we are led into contact with the mystery of his divinity.

29. Enunciar o mistério, com a possibilidade até de fixar contextualmente um ícone que o represente, é como abrir um cenário sobre o qual se concentra a atenção. As palavras orientam a imaginação e o espírito para aquele episódio ou momento concreto da vida de Cristo. Na espiritualidade que se foi desenvolvendo na Igreja, tanto a veneração de ícones como inúmeras devoções ricas de elementos sensíveis e mesmo o método proposto por Santo Inácio de Loiola nos Exercícios Espirituais recorrem ao elemento visível e figurativo (a chamada compositio loci), considerando-o de grande ajuda para facilitar a concentração do espírito no mistério. Aliás, é uma metodologia que corresponde à própria lógica da Encarnação: em Jesus, Deus quis tomar feições humanas. É através da sua realidade corpórea que somos levados a tomar contacto com o seu mistério divino.
His Holiness continues in the Apostolic Letter:
This need for concreteness finds further expression in the announcement of the various mysteries of the Rosary. Obviously these mysteries neither replace the Gospel nor exhaust its content. The Rosary, therefore, is no substitute for lectio divina; on the contrary, it presupposes and promotes it. Yet, even though the mysteries contemplated in the Rosary, even with the addition of the mysteria lucis, do no more than outline the fundamental elements of the life of Christ, they easily draw the mind to a more expansive reflection on the rest of the Gospel, especially when the Rosary is prayed in a setting of prolonged recollection.
É a esta exigência de concretização que dá resposta a enunciação dos vários mistérios do Rosário. Certamente, estes não substituem o Evangelho, nem fazem referência a todas as suas páginas. Por isso, o Rosário não substitui a lectio divina; pelo contrário, supõe-na e promove-a. Listening to the word of God (+ The Rosary)
30. In order to supply a Biblical foundation and greater depth to our meditation, it is helpful to follow the announcement of the mystery with the proclamation of a related Biblical passage, long or short, depending on the circumstances. No other words can ever match the efficacy of the inspired word. As we listen, we are certain that this is the word of God, spoken for today and spoken “for me”.

A fim de dar fundamentação bíblica e maior profundidade à meditação, é útil que a enunciação do mistério seja acompanhada pela proclamação de uma passagem bíblica alusiva, que, segundo as circunstâncias, pode ser mais ou menos longa. De facto, as outras palavras não atingem nunca a eficácia própria da palavra inspirada. Esta há-de ser escutada com a certeza de que é Palavra de Deus, pronunciada para o dia de hoje e “para mim”.
If received in this way, the word of God can become part of the Rosary's methodology of repetition without giving rise to the ennui derived from the simple recollection of something already well known. It is not a matter of recalling information but of allowing God to speak. In certain solemn communal celebrations, this word can be appropriately illustrated by a brief commentary.
Assim acolhida, ela entra na metodologia de repetição do Rosário, sem provocar o enfado que derivaria duma simples evocação de informação já bem conhecida. Não, não se trata de trazer à memória uma informação, mas de deixar Deus “falar”. Em ocasiões solenes e comunitárias, esta palavra pode ser devidamente ilustrada com um breve comentário.
Silence
31. Listening and meditation are nourished by silence. After the announcement of the mystery and the proclamation of the word, it is fitting to pause and focus one's attention for a suitable period of time on the mystery concerned, before moving into vocal prayer. A discovery of the importance of silence is one of the secrets of practicing contemplation and meditation. One drawback of a society dominated by technology and the mass media is the fact that silence becomes increasingly difficult to achieve. Just as moments of silence are recommended in the Liturgy, so too in the recitation of the Rosary it is fitting to pause briefly after listening to the word of God, while the mind focuses on the content of a particular mystery.

31. A escuta e a meditação alimentam-se de silêncio. Por isso, após a enunciação do mistério e a proclamação da Palavra, é conveniente parar, durante um côngruo período de tempo, a fixar o olhar sobre o mistério meditado, antes de começar a oração vocal. A redescoberta do valor do silêncio é um dos segredos para a prática da contemplação e da meditação. Entre as limitações duma sociedade de forte predominância tecnológica e mediática, conta-se o facto de se tornar cada vez mais difícil o silêncio. Tal como na Liturgia se recomendam momentos de silêncio, assim também na recitação do Rosário é oportuno fazer uma pausa depois da escuta da Palavra de Deus enquanto o espírito se fixa no conteúdo do relativo mistério.

The prayer of the Rosary, you know, that's what I'm supposed to love. As I think about those mysteries, I'm supposed to fall in love with the scriptures in a sense. I'm supposed to fall in love with the story of a God who was so caught up in love with us that he came to this earth, that he died for us, and that he rose from the dead. When I [pray] the Rosary on The Rosary Crew, when we [contemplate] each mystery, I always give a little, just brief meditation on each of the mysteries.So that when we go to pray the decade, it's not just a mechanical rattling off of the first joyful mystery is the Annunciation, our Father who art, you know, that I'm going to try to help us enter in to that mystery. That's very important to me. Quando [rezo] o Rosário na Tripulação do Rosário, quando [contemplamos] cada mistério, dou sempre um pouco, apenas uma breve meditação sobre cada um dos mistérios. I would say the Annunciation, because it begins there, right? So it's the Gospels and it's the beginning. So when God takes on flesh in Mary's womb and the fact that God is no longer distant, but he's now with us, right? He's Emmanuel. And therefore that now that he becomes one with us and then where he's going to take us, but it always begins with the incarnation. So I would say that's the most important. Essa é uma ótima pergunta. Eu diria a Anunciação, porque começa aí, né? Então são os Evangelhos e é o começo. And so that's why we pray the rosary because when we pray the rosary Mary is teaching us about her son Jesus. We're asking for Mary's help. And then she's showing us Jesus as we're meditating on the mysteries. And so that meditation is very powerful to transform us from the inside out. But I think time and again, people find that the rosary is something that really sets them at ease. And, you know, I know there are people that aren't regular rosary prayers, but I do know they pray the rosary when maybe they think their son has a brain tumor. They pray the rosary when their mom is in the hospital. And so they fall back on it and it gives them comfort that Mary is praying with them, that it's something that they learned about, something that they were told. And even if it's not common in their life, they still find solace in it. Mas acho que, repetidamente, as pessoas descobrem que o terço é algo que realmente as deixa à vontade. E, você sabe, eu sei que há pessoas que não são orações regulares do terço, mas eu sei que elas rezam o terço quando talvez pensem que seu filho tem um tumor cerebral. Now, I know a gentleman who was, he was in jail for a while and leading up to his trial and all that, he started praying the rosary every day. He started going to a shrine of Our Lady, and it slowly began to change his life. So the prayers of Our Lady can never be underestimated. They are quite powerful, and we call Her that Virgin Most Powerful. So when She prays for us, it's powerful indeed. Agora, eu conheço um senhor que estava, ele estava preso por um tempo e antes de seu julgamento e tudo isso, ele começou a rezar o terço todos os dias. So we never have to fear, you know, reaching out to Mary. Look at St. John Paul II, who worried just a little bit that maybe he was putting too much emphasis on that relationship with Mary, St. Louis de Montfort allayed his fears by telling him, I mean by St. John Paul II reading those writings and he heard from him that yes you need to go to our dear mother in heaven and she brings us Jesus. Por isso, nunca temos que temer, você sabe, estender a mão a Maria. World Mission Sunday is this upcoming Sunday, October 22. In light of this, Fr. Peter Turrone reflects on his time spent working as a missionary in the Gobi Desert – the largest desert in Asia. | O Dia Mundial das Missões é no próximo domingo, 22 de outubro. À luz disto, o P. Peter Turrone reflete sobre o tempo que passou a trabalhar como missionário no deserto de Gobi – o maior deserto da Ásia.
1. What led you to missionary work?
After returning to the faith in my mid-twenties, I began to devour books on the lives of the saints. St. Paul, St. John Brebeuf and many other missionaries sparked the desire to bring Jesus Christ to people who had not yet come to know and love him. While earning my undergraduate degree, I discerned my call to the priesthood. Later, during grad studies, I felt a persistent pull towards missionary work. During a Marian Conference at the University of Toronto, I came across an exhibit made by the Consolata Missionaries. Their missionary work seemed to resonate with me. After getting to know the community, I entered as a postulant and was then sent to Italy for the novitiate. It was then that I first learned about the new mission they had just opened in Mongolia. After studying theology in Rome, my superiors sent me there to prepare for priesthood. It was unforgettable. Everything that I had hoped for came to pass.
1. O que o levou ao trabalho missionário? Depois de voltar à fé aos vinte e poucos anos, comecei a devorar livros sobre a vida dos santos. São Paulo, São João Brebeuf e muitos outros missionários despertaram o desejo de levar Jesus Cristo a pessoas que ainda não o tinham conhecido e amado. Enquanto ganhava meu diploma de graduação, discerni meu chamado para o sacerdócio. Mais tarde, durante os estudos de pós-graduação, senti uma atração persistente pelo trabalho missionário. Durante uma Conferência Mariana na Universidade de Toronto, deparei-me com uma exposição feita pelos Missionários da Consolata. Seu trabalho missionário parecia ressoar comigo. Depois de conhecer a comunidade, entrei como postulante e fui enviado para a Itália para o noviciado. Foi então que soube pela primeira vez da nova missão que tinham acabado de abrir na Mongólia. Depois de estudar teologia em Roma, meus superiores me enviaram para lá para me preparar para o sacerdócio. Foi inesquecível. Tudo o que eu esperava aconteceu.
