BOOK SPOTLIGHT: “CHILD CONSECRATION TO JESUS THROUGH MARY” (CONSECRATION OPTION FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES)
REPOST: DR. BLYTHE KAUFMAN (GUEST AUTHOR)
Child Consecration: To Jesus through Mary—Following in the Spirit of St. Thérèse, the Little Flower (childconsecration.com)
"St. Thérèse wrote in her autobiography, “God gave me the consolation of contemplating at close range the souls of little children.” She reflected, “Seeing innocent souls at such close range, I understand what a misfortune it was when they were not formed in their early years, when they are soft as wax upon which one can imprint either virtue or vice.”
Indeed, an innocent soul is precious. St. Dominic Savio, who died at the early age of fourteen, was known for his gentle and kind soul. His virtue was well developed, and he was known to help others along the path of virtue who were living at the Oratory with St. John Bosco. In his memoirs, St. John Bosco reported a vision he had while sleeping of St. Dominic Savio. The boy was leading other children in Heaven. He was clothed in garments with jewels and flowers that gave honor to the purity he maintained within his soul. When St. John Bosco asked St. Dominic what was his greatest consolation at the time of death, Dominic replied, “What helped me most and gave me greatest joy when I was dying was the loving care and help of the great Mother of God. Tell your sons not to fail to keep close to her while they are alive. But hurry—the time is almost up.”
Thus, we see there is indeed a window of opportunity to cultivate tender young souls in virtue when such work is gentle and well received. Our Lord sends us help with such an important task. He sends us His Mother to help in cultivating holiness in His children. Our Lady, in her humility, never forces her help upon anyone, but waits to be asked.
This Consecration journey to Jesus through Mary is the request we make to Mary to bring a soul entrusted to her under her mantle of protection. The soul brings all it has—past, present and future—to be placed at the disposal of Mary. In turn Our Lady takes the soul by the hand and guides it to its true home in Heaven while cultivating a multitude of fruits.
The Consecration is one with an ultimate end leading to Jesus. As Jesus is one with the Father and the Breath between the two is the Holy Spirit, then essentially the Consecration brings a soul to closer union with God in His three Persons (cf. Catechism 703).

Total Consecration:
PLEDGE to Jesus through Mary
by: St. Louis Marie de Montfort
Eternal and incarnate Wisdom, most lovable and adorable Jesus, true God and true man, only Son of the eternal Father and of Mary always Virgin, I adore you profoundly, dwelling in the splendour of your Father from all eternity and in the virginal womb of Mary, your most worthy Mother, at the time of your incarnation.
I thank you for having emptied yourself in assuming the condition of a slave to set me free from the cruel slavery of the evil one. I praise and glorify you for having willingly chosen to obey Mary, your holy Mother, in all things, so that through surrendering all my power and selfdetermination by dwelling in her womb I may always be your faithful lover.
But I must confess that I have not kept the vows and promises, which I made to you so solemnly at my baptism. I have not fulfilled my obligations, and I do not deserve to be called your child or even your loving slave.
Because I have turned away from you in my sins and I feel so little and poor in my weakness, I do not feel great enough to approach your divine Majesty, but I do feel that I can approach you in your littleness as you dwell in Mary’s womb.
That is why I turn to the intercession and the mercy of your holy Mother, whom you yourself have given me to be my meeting place with you. Through her, in her womb, I hope to obtain from you contrition and pardon for my sins, and that Wisdom whom I desire to dwell in me always.
I turn to you, then, Mary Immaculate, living tabernacle of God, in whom eternal Wisdom willed to receive the adoration of **men, women and angels.**
I greet you as Queen of heaven and earth, for all that is under God has been made subject to your sovereignty.
I call upon you, the unfailing refuge of sinners, confident in your mercy that has never forsaken anyone.
Grant my desire for divine Wisdom and, in support of my petition, accept the promises and the offering of myself, which I now make, conscious of my littleness.
I, __________________, an unfaithful sinner, renew and ratify today through you my baptismal promises. I renounce forever Satan, his empty promises, and his evil designs, and I give myself completely to Jesus Christ, the incarnate Wisdom, to carry my cross after him for the rest of my life, and to be more faithful to him than I have been till now.
This day, with the whole court of heaven as witness, I choose you, Mary, as my Mother and Queen. I surrender and consecrate myself to you, body and soul, with all that I possess, both spiritual and material, even including the spiritual value of all my actions, past, present, and to come.
I give you the full right to dispose of me and all that belongs to me, without any reservations, in whatever way you please, for the greater glory of God in time and throughout eternity. I entrust myself to your loving, maternal care with the same total abandon as the Baby Jesus who chose to dwell in your womb. Accept, gracious Virgin, this little offering of myself, to honour and imitate the obedience, which eternal Wisdom willingly chose to have towards you, his Mother.
I wish to acknowledge the authority which both of you have over this pitiful sinner. By it I wish also to thank God for the privileges bestowed on you by the Blessed Trinity. I solemnly declare that for the future I will try to honor and obey you in all things as an infant in your womb.
O admirable Mother, present me to your dear Son as His little twin in your womb, so that he who redeemed me through you, will now receive me through you. Mother of mercy, grant me the favour of obtaining the true Wisdom of God, and so make me one of those whom you love, teach and guide, whom you nourish and protect as your own infant in your womb. Virgin most faithful, make me in everything so committed a disciple, imitator, and twin infant of Jesus, your Son, incarnate Wisdom, that I may become, through your intercession and example, fully mature with the fullness which Jesus possessed on earth, and with the fullness of his glory in heaven. Amen.
STEP 7: REFLECT ON THE SPIRITUALITY OF ST. JACINTA & ST. FRANCISCO ON TODAY’S FEAST DAY
by: ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II
[EXCERPTS REPOST FROM HOMILY, MAY 13, 2000]
VIAGEM APOSTÓLICA A FÁTIMA HOMILIA DO PAPA JOÃO PAULO II - NA CERIMÓNIA DE BEATIFICAÇÃO - DOS VENERÁVEIS FRANCISCO E JACINTA 13 de Maio de 2000:
1. "Father, ... to you I offer praise; for what you have hidden from the learned and the clever you have revealed to the merest children" (Mt 11: 25).
CITATION A: ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II ON ST. FRANCISCO MARTO
2. What most impressed and entirely absorbed Bl. Francisco was God in that immense light which penetrated the inmost depths of the three children. But God told only Francisco "how sad" he was, as he said. One night his father heard him sobbing and asked him why he was crying; his son answered: "I was thinking of Jesus who is so sad because of the sins that are committed against him". He was motivated by one desire - so expressive of how children think - "to console Jesus and make him happy".
CITATION B: ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II ON ST. JACINTA MARTO
4. Little Jacinta felt and personally experienced Our Lady's anguish, offering herself heroically as a victim for sinners. One day, when she and Francisco had already contracted the illness that forced them to bed, the Virgin Mary came to visit them at home, as the little one recounts: "Our Lady came to see us and said that soon she would come and take Francisco to heaven. And she asked me if I still wanted to convert more sinners. I told her yes". And when the time came for Francisco to leave, the little girl tells him: "Give my greetings to Our Lord and to Our Lady and tell them that I am enduring everything they want for the conversion of sinners".
Jacinta had been so deeply moved by the vision of hell during the apparition of 13 July that no mortification or penance seemed too great to save sinners.
CITATION C: LETTER TO CHILDREN BY ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II ON “THE SCHOOL OF OUR LADY”
6. My last words are for the children:
Dear boys and girls,
… Our Lady needs you all to console Jesus, who is sad because of the bad things done to him; he needs your prayers and your sacrifices for sinners.
Ask your parents and teachers to enrol you in the "school" of Our Lady, so that she can teach you to be like the little shepherds, who tried to do whatever she asked them.
CITATION D: LETTER TO CHILDREN BY ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II ON “HOLINESS” (THE SCHOOL OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY)
I tell you that "one makes more progress in a short time of submission and dependence on Mary than during entire years of personal initiatives, relying on oneself alone" (St Louis de Montfort, The True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, n. 155).
This was how the little shepherds became saints so quickly. A woman who gave hospitality to Jacinta in Lisbon, on hearing the very beautiful and wise advice that the little girl gave, asked who taught it to her. "It was Our Lady", she replied. Devoting themselves with total generosity to the direction of such a good Teacher, Jacinta and Francisco soon reached the heights of perfection.
“May the message of their lives live on for ever to light humanity's way!”

[OPTIONAL STEP 8:] SERMON SPOTLIGHT: “LOVE AS GOD LOVES”
Reflect on Barron’s point:
Jesus is not interested primarily in making us “ethically upright”, something the great philosophers like Kant and Nietzsche sought after;
He was not interested in a right “political programme” (3:30-3:34).
Barron goes on to say, “What he is interested in is divinization: that we become conformed to God’s way of being.”
If you missed the sermon from yesterday, listen to his sermon here:
JOURNAL TOPIC FOR ADVANCED STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL OF OUR LADY:
Consider:
how can a 33-Day Consecration to Jesus through Our Lady DIVINIZE us and help us “conform” to God’s way of being through the Holy Rosary?

CONSECRATION PROCESS - EXCERPT FROM 227-231
“I shall briefly mention some practices which I call exterior, not because they are performed without inner attention but because they have an exterior element as distinct from those which are purely interior.
ON “Preparation and Consecration”
DE MONTFORT’S INSTRUCTIONS: DAYS 1-12 - EMPTY SELF OF THE SPIRIT OF THE WORLD
227. Those who desire to take up this special devotion, (which has not been erected into a confraternity, although this would be desirable), should
spend at least twelve days in emptying themselves of the spirit of the world,
which is opposed to the spirit of Jesus, as I have recommended in the first part of this preparation for the reign of Jesus Christ. They should then spend three weeks imbuing themselves with the spirit of Jesus through the most Blessed Virgin. Here is a programme they might follow:
228.
During the first week
they should offer up all their prayers and acts of devotion to acquire knowledge of themselves and sorrow for their sins.Let them perform all their actions in a spirit of humility. With this end in view they may, if they wish, meditate on what I have said concerning our corrupted nature, and
consider themselves during six days of the week as nothing but sails, slugs, toads, swine, snakes and goats.
Or else they may meditate on the following three considerations of St. Bernard:"Remember what you were - corrupted seed; what you are - a body destined for decay; what you will be -food for worms."
DE MONTFORT’S INSTRUCTIONS: DAYS 13-19 - DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE OF SELF
They will ask our Lord and the Holy Spirit to enlighten them saying, "Lord, that I may see," or "Lord, let me know myself," or the
"Come, Holy Spirit".
Every day they should
say the Litany of the Holy Spirit,
with the prayer that follows, as indicated in the first part of this work. They will turn to our Blessed Lady and beg her to obtain for them that great grace which is the foundation of all others, the grace ofself-knowledge.
For this intention they will say each day theAve Maris Stella
and theLitany of the Blessed Virgin
.
DE MONTFORT’S INSTRUCTIONS: DAYS 20-26 - DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LADY
229. Each day of the second week they should endeavour in all their prayers and works to acquire an understanding of the Blessed Virgin and ask the Holy Spirit for this grace. They may read and meditate upon what we have already said about her. They should
recite daily
theLitany of the Holy Spirit
and theAve Maris Stella
as during the first week.In addition they will say at least five decades of the Rosary
for greater understanding of Mary.
DE MONTFORT’S INSTRUCTIONS: DAYS 27-33 - DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS CHRIST
230. During the third week they should seek to understand Jesus Christ better. They may read and meditate on what we have already said about him. They may say the prayer of St. Augustine which they will find at the beginning of the second part of this book. Again with St. Augustine, they may pray repeatedly, "Lord, that I may know you," or "Lord, that I may see." As during the previous week, they should recite the
Litany of the Holy Spirit
and theAve Maris Stella,
adding every day theLitany of the Holy Name of Jesus.
DE MONTFORT’S INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONSECRATION - DAY 34 - CONSECRATION DAY ON THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION
231. At the end of these three weeks they should
go to confession and Holy Communion with the intention of consecrating themselves to Jesus through Mary as slaves of love.
When receiving Holy Communion they could follow the method given later on. They thenrecite the act of consecration which is given at the end of this book
.If they do not have a printed copy of the act, they should write it out or have it copied and then sign it on the very day they make it.”

DE MONTFORT — MORE NOTES ON TOTAL CONSECRATION:
“perfect consecration to Jesus is but a perfect and complete consecration of oneself to the Blessed Virgin, which is the devotion I teach; or in other words, it is the perfect renewal of the vows and promises of holy baptism.
121. This devotion consists in giving oneself entirely to Mary in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her. It requires us to give:
(1) Our body with its senses and members;
(2) Our soul with its faculties;
(3) Our present material possessions and all we shall acquire in the future;
(4) Our interior and spiritual possessions, that is, our merits, virtues and good actions of the past, the present and the future.
In other words, we give her all that we possess both in our natural life and in our spiritual life as well as everything we shall acquire in the future in the order of nature, of grace, and of glory in heaven. This we do without any reservation, not even of a penny, a hair, or the smallest good deed. And we give for all eternity without claiming or expecting, in return for our offering and our service, any other reward than the honour of belonging to our Lord through Mary and in Mary, even though our Mother were not - as in fact she always is - the most generous and appreciative of all God's creatures.
