THE ROSARY HOUR PODCAST NEWSLETTER | 2nd JOYFUL MYSTERY
INTERVIEW LIVE RECORD TRANSCRIPT: The Secret Joy of the Visitation
AMELIA:
Father Elias, we are praying the 2nd Joyful Mystery. What does the 2nd Joyful Mystery Teach us about welcoming Jesus into our homes?
FATHER ELIAS MARY MILLS (FRANCISCAN OF THE IMMACULATE) reflected with Amelia upon the Mystery of “The Feast of the Visitation” and provides some helpful notes that all might explore on Mondays and Thursdays when meditating upon scripture and praying the Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary.
FR. ELIAS: Well, as you know, the second Joyful Mystery is … Our Lady, inspired by the Holy Spirit, after she miraculously conceived our Lord in her womb, was also inspired to go and see her cousin Elizabeth, who was with child, even though she was quite elderly … was a miraculous conception for her cousin Elizabeth.
So Our Lady made haste to go and visit her cousin Elizabeth.
And as soon as Our Lady, of course, greeted her, entered into her home, she probably said the traditional Jewish greeting, which is Shalom Aleichem (Hebrew: שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם)… and means peace and all good things to you — that it wasn't just peace, but peace and all that God wishes to grant to you, may you receive.
And at that, of course, St. Elizabeth said that she was filled with the Holy Spirit and the child in her womb, upon hearing the voice of Our Lady, leapt for joy.
So I think it teaches us that, like St. Elizabeth, she was one of those who was expecting and long desired our Lord to come, the Messiah to come to the people.
She and Zechariah were two faithful souls. They just had not had a child. And so they lived in kind of a shame because the Jewish custom was that you would be blessed if you had a child.
And they thought, well, what did we do wrong that we didn't have a child?
But God used them and their trials to bring about this great mystery. And so I think that what St. Elizabeth especially teaches us is that we have to have this desire to please God and want to have God come to us in our lives.
And so they had a welcoming heart.
They welcomed Our Lady, and in welcoming Our Lady, of course, not knowing that, but she was inspired by the Holy Spirit to know that Jesus, her Messiah, was with her.
Because who am I, she said, that the mother of my Lord should come to me.
So I think that it tells us that we must always be to be expectant, to be ready for the coming of the Lord.
He may come at any time.
And because Elizabeth and her husband were both devout souls, they were ready for this event and were disposed by the Holy Spirit. For the Holy Spirit, grace builds on nature. And so because they were constantly and desiring to do God's will, When God did visit them, they were ready to receive him, and they received him with joy and open hearts and all the blessing and peace that came with that.
So truly did they receive peace and all good things.
ON THE JOY OF HOSPITALITY & THE 2ND JOYFUL MYSTERY
FR. ELIAS MARY MILLS, FRANCISCAN OF THE IMMACULATE (USA): You know, I remember a priest told me one time that a guest in the house is Christ in the house.
I don't know if you've ever heard that before, but if you ever have a guest in your house... that it's like having Christ come to visit you, and that you should always treat any guest who comes to your home as if it was Christ coming to see you and to visit you.
So I think that that's probably the attitude that one should have, that that's what it teaches us in this second joyful mystery, is that we're supposed to see Christ in our neighbor, and Our Lady, of course, brings our Lord together, Jesus himself.
But anytime that we encounter someone in our lives, we should greet them as if they were Christ.
And I think that way we will be more effective in in our and are welcoming them, and we may be the only Christ that they ever meet, as Mother Angelica used to say:
“You may be the only Christ your neighbor will ever see.”
So I think that's also, it teaches us that we should also have that, that welcome everyone into our lives as if Christ has come to visit us.

ST. JEAN VIANNEY | 100 YEARS OF SAINTHOOD continues to November 2025
