Below is the poster to share on social media with those you know in Ireland who might need some little encouragement to join this wonderful event, even virtually.

AN ADVOCATE OF FAMILY PRAYER

Fr. Patrick Peyton was a pastor who was not afraid to think big! A humble priest from Ireland, he decided to make Family Prayer the focus of his life ministry following a healing by Our Lady after his stay in hospital.

After a miraculous healing from tuberculosis that he attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Mother, Fr. Peyton dedicated himself to spreading the practice of the family rosary. Divine Providence had great plans for Fr. Peyton and he responded with zeal for the work! He was a pioneer in harnessing the power of the media for service to the Gospel. His rosary rallies were broadcasted around the world via radio. He convinced celebrities such as Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Raymond Burr to lend their fame to the promotion of the rosary through radio, television, and film.

He even influenced Pope Paul VI’s Marian encyclicals1 and wrote many thousands of letters to the Vatican and other organizations encouraging the prayer of the Rosary. His inspiring testimony and life and story is narrated in his book, “All for Her” via Ave Maria Press.

NOTE: If you are thinking of making a visit to Ireland, one can go to mass at the birthplace of Venerable Fr. Patrick Peyton in Attymass this summer or anytime of year, even virtually. See the FB page: https://www.facebook.com/stjosephschurchattymass

READ A SAMPLE OF THE BOOK HERE ON the ROLE Fr. Peyton’s father played in teaching him to pray the Rosary every day:

“What impressed me was the way he lived and the way he prayed, especially when each evening we all knelt together to say the Rosary. If there was one inflexible rule in our home, it was that every one of us had to participate in the family Rosary led by my father. It didn’t matter how hard or how long the day’s work—digging potatoes, cutting turf, or repairing a road. Often one or another would drop to sleep on his knees. But he was always brought back into the prayer, kindly but firmly. It was the entire family praising God, asking Him through His Mother to protect it, to guide it to the destiny He had intended for it. That nightly scene constitutes my earliest memory and the most abiding. From it I derive the entire pattern and purpose of my existence. Other than the Rosary, we did not engage much in formal prayer. We went, of course, to Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, climbing on foot to the parish church at Attymass three miles away, in which I had been baptized on January 13, 1909, just four days after my birth. And, as I said, we went down to Ballina, a little farther in a different direction, to make the First Fridays before that devotion had become known in our parish. Later, our pastor introduced it, and we then began to attend in our own parish church of St. Joseph at Attymass. In addition, there was the major event twice a year, about Easter and in October, when the pastor came for “the stations.” That was a custom going back to the days of persecution in Ireland, when there was neither church nor resident priest. A priest would then come in stealth at infrequent and irregular intervals to hear confessions, say Mass, and distribute the Eucharist in a secluded spot... "

Fr. Elias noted in a recent Spiritual Direction session the importance of pastors encouraging Fathers / Husbands to lead the Rosary at the parish. As it is First Saturday, why not speak with some dads in your community about starting a Rosary led by fathers once a week / a month, perhaps on Thursdays or even First Fridays / First Saturdays in the month of June. Here is a guide to First Saturdays written by Dr. Bailey with some resources:

THE ROSARY PRIEST: WHO WAS FATHER PEYTON?
In 2022, our podcast asked Fr. Looney to talk about Fr. Peyton, the Rosary Priest. This important history was first introduced to us in our first Spiritual Direction and visioning session with Fr. Anthony Gramlich in 2022, before which time, our podcast members didn’t even know who Patrick Peyton was!

If you are reading this, why not help advance the cause for the full canonization of Fr. Peyton (already a Venerable) and also pray today for those pilgrims who will come together at Knock Shrine today for this rally that he began 70+ years ago.

FYI — Here is a little background on Peyton from Fr. Edward Looney:

FR. MARIUS ON MIDWEST RADIO, IRELAND TALKS ABOUT TODAY'S ROSARY RALLY

Below is an invitation via Fr. Marius one of the organizers of the Rosary Rally in Ireland and who spoke about it in a short interview with Midwest Radio yesterday.

He reports the wonderful increase in numbers attending this Rosary Rally which in 2023 saw 10,000+ people gather — including a great presence of Children’s Rosary. It is our hope that these numbers will increase today in 2024 and that more people will plan to be part of this Rally in 2025.2

UNITE IN PRAYER WITH IRELAND!

Let us all unite in prayer with Ireland and pray for all the people, families, children, pastors, apostolates, etc. who will be spending the day at Knock Shrine where Our Lady appeared.

In a special way, let us pray especially for the sick, and also for the Senior Centre in the care of Fr. Gibson. Also, let us pray for all Seniors who we might even this weekend visit to pray the Rosary with (after perhaps reading some books, listening to some music together, singing, listening to stories, doing a puzzle) as part of our efforts in this year of prayer as we approach Jubilee 2025.

FR. STEVE’S INVITATION:

Today’s post has a repost of Fr. Steven Gibson inviting people to this event. He is traditionally the main organizer for this event and today you can help him and the pilgrims to celebrate the spirit of Father Peyton who loved the Rosary and who had a profound impact on faith and family by his example of public prayer of the Rosary.

The “Public Prayer” of the Rosary is emphasized in “The Secret of the Rosary” by: St. Louis Marie de Montfort, and we must remember that to pray in large groups is a great grace that Heaven invites us to organize anytime of year for we receive from that public prayer the merits of the Rosaries prayed as a group.

Saying the Rosary as a group

“Of all the ways of saying the holy Rosary, the most glorious to God, most salutary to our souls, and the most terrible to the devil is that of saying or chanting the Rosary publicly in two choirs.”

Pg 76

“…every time you say the Rosary in common, you gain a hundred days’ indulgence. Public prayer is more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down his mercy, and the Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always advocated it in times of disasters and general distress.”

Pg 77

“Finally, when the Rosary is said in common, it is far more formidable to the devil, because in this public prayer it is an army that is attacking him. He can often overcome the prayer of an individual, but if it is joined to that of others, the devil has much more trouble in getting the best of it.”

Pg 78

Father Patrick Peyton, also known as the “Rosary Priest,” was a fervent advocate for family prayer and the Rosary.

  • (For those who do not know, Fr. Peyton He was born in Ireland and later emigrated to the United States.)

Fr. Marius tells a bit of the history of Fr. Peyton’s Spiritual Direction to Hollywood and how he inspired many famous Hollywood stars like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra to be part of this effort to spread the Rosary.

Venerable Peyton spoke in front of 35 to 40 million people “live” about the Rosary. Through Peyton’s Family Rosary Crusades, the world came to know the famous phrase “The family that prays together, stays together” — and Peyton “emphasized the importance of familial bonds.” (Peyton Center website).

The Rosary in Marialis cultus

In the 1969 letter marking the four-hundredth anniversary of approval of the rosary (1569), Pope Paul VI expressed the wish that the rosary, "either in the form bequeathed by Pius V or in those forms adapted to contemporary spirit with the consent of ecclesial authorities," might be a public and universal prayer. Some attempts were made to harmonize the rosary with the liturgy. These adaptations usually involved a simplification of the rosary. In a significant book on the renewal of Marian devotion, Msgr. Vergilio Noè (a noted liturgist, now a Cardinal) pointed out that, during its long history, the rosary had acquired a number of additions which made it "easily given to distractions and weariness." Hymns, readings, changing postures, a rhythmic recitation were all possible, he said. A principle of prayer, particularly applicable to the rosary, was that quality was preferable to quantity--better one or a few decades attentively prayed than a hurried recitation of the full rosary.

However, as was the case with other issues at the time, the reasons for the proposed reforms were not understood. Efforts at harmonizing the rosary with the liturgy were perceived as a tampering with, and an impoverishment of, this prayer. Resistance to further reform hardened in some quarters with the publication of the new liturgical calendar (1969). The elimination of a few popular Marian feasts and the reduction of others to optional commemorations confirmed the suspicion of some that both the council and the postconciliar liturgical reforms were profoundly anti-Marian.

In the midst of this crisis of Marian devotion (May 1971), Father Patrick Peyton C.S.C., director of the Family Rosary Crusade, and known throughout the Catholic world for his promotion of the Family Rosary, wrote an impassioned letter to Pope Paul VI. In it he asked that the Family Rosary be declared a liturgical prayer. "My heart cries out for a papal document which could take the form of an encyclical," he wrote. "May I beseech Your Holiness to enhance, enrich and raise to a higher level of efficacy the Family Rosary by proclaiming it a liturgical prayer." Father Peyton's letter persuaded Paul VI to address the Church on the subject of the rosary. His secretary of state asked the Congregation for Divine Worship to "prepare a draft of a papal document" that would encourage the "recitation of the rosary by families."

After studying the request, the Congregation suggested that the rosary be considered within the context of Marian devotion as a whole, and that Marian devotion should be related to the liturgical reforms. The Congregation requested Father Ignacio Calabuig, O.S.M. (presently rector of the Pontifical Theological Faculty Marianum in Rome), and the theological faculty of the Marianum to study the issue and propose a draft for what would be the papal letter on the rosary.
