St. Anthony Mary Claret | San Antonio María Claret Bishop (1807- 1870) | Misionero, escritor, fundador, arzobispo, confesor de Isabel II, santo.
St. Claret was Archbishop in Cuba, Father of Vatican Council I, and religious Founder. He is noted for many apostolic writings, a fruitful missionary work, and an example of heroic suffering under persecution.
SPANISH: Ya desde su niñez bebió y respiró la piedad y mostró inteligencia despierta y buen corazón. A los cinco años, en lugar de dormir, pensaba en la eternidad: en la gloria de los que se salvan y en la desdicha de los que se condenan, y deseaba salvar a los pecadores de una eternidad desgraciada. Esta idea —decía— “es la que más me ha hecho y me hace trabajar aún, y me hará trabajar mientras viva, en la conversión de los pecadores”.2
PORTUGUESE: Desde a infância bebia e respirava piedade e demonstrava inteligência apurada e bom coração. Aos cinco anos, em vez de dormir, pensou na eternidade — na glória dos que são salvos e na miséria dos condenados — e desejou salvar os pecadores de uma eternidade infeliz. Esta ideia, disse ele, "é a que mais me fez trabalhar e me fará trabalhar ainda, e me fará trabalhar enquanto eu viver, para a conversão dos pecadores".
ENGLISH: From his childhood he drank and breathed piety and showed keen intelligence and a good heart. At the age of five, instead of sleeping, he thought of eternity—of the glory of those who are saved and of the misery of those who are damned—and he longed to save sinners from an unhappy eternity. This idea, he said, "is the one that has made me work the most and makes me work still, and will make me work as long as I live, for the conversion of sinners."
That the Rosary is the School of Our Lady was understood deeply by St. Anthony Mary Claret.
As a Bishop, he established the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Above is the seal he designed (the seal of the Claretian Fathers) that is featured on the floor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel at the National Shrine (USA).
As Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, St. Claret also founded the Teaching Sisters of Mary Immaculate in Spain.
His efforts to spread devotion to the Blessed Sacrament AND to the Immaculate Heart of Mary reminds us of 4 things: Our Lady is
- Mother
- Foundress
- Formatrix
- Protectress
St. Anthony Claret was a great advocate of the Holy Rosary
- In 1813, he attended the school of Don Antonio Pascual and there he learned the catechism by memory.
At the age of 8, he led the recitation of the Holy Rosary in Church and in his father’s shop!
Claret lived during the time of February 11 and July 16, 1858 apparitions at Lourdes when at the age of 14, St. Bernadette had a series of visions of the Virgin Mary in the grotto of Massabielle. (Imagine: Claret was alive when Our Lady shared with St. Bernadette what is now a Marian dogma: “I am the Immaculate Conception”!)
In 1858 , St. Anthony Claret then went on to write Devoción del santísimo rosario (Barcelona, Spain) translated as “Devotion of the Most Holy Rosary”.
This book contained:

His method of reciting the Rosary
Meditations on each of the mysteries
In his book “El Santisimo Rosario explicado” (Barcelona, Spain), translated as “The Holy Rosary explained” he gave an explanation of the Rosary in dialogue form, based on other authors.” (Translation: Portuguese).
One of the “Rosary Meditations” by St. Anthony Mary Claret is as follows for the JOYFUL MYSTERIES:3
I. Annunciation
1 - The Holy Trinity decrees the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God.
2 - The Blessed Virgin is chosen to be Mother of God Who is to become Man.
3 - The Archangel St. Gabriel announces this news to the Virgin Mary.
4 - Blessed Mary, who was at prayer, listens to the Archangel.
5 - The Archangel says to Mary: "Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with Thee."
6 - At these words ... Mary is surprised and wonders
7 - The Archangel says to Her, "Fear not, Mary; for Thou wilt conceive through the action of the Holy Spirit".
8 - Mary answers: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto Me according to Thy word."
9 - In that instant the Holy Spirit casts His shadow on Her
10 - The Word becomes Man and dwells among us, and is now truly in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. Let us ask for the Spiritual Fruit of Humility by imitating the Son of God and His Most Holy Mother.

Father Barney is an Irish Jesuit priest, currently working at the People’s Church, Clongowes Wood College, Co. Kildare, Ireland . Since ordination in 1970 his main apostolate was as Director of the international Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart of Jesus a position now retired from to pursue other interest of ministry.

For Advent 2023, Padre Nuno Rocha will offer recently composed reflections on “Joy” (Alegria) for 2023 in a new Rosary project teaching the Rosary, and the “Why” of Joy, in Portuguese with text and Rosary Prayers also curated at edited by Pe. Nuno. This project took a long time to complete, with much need for discernment in finding the right materials to present these mysteries. It was created for children (of any age) by children with the adults in their lives helping them to re-discover what it means to be a child of God. Look for “Terço no Caminho” here in English and in Portuguese before Dec. 1, 2023.
This publication also features sermons by Fr. Peter Turrone, including reflections entitled “The Rosary as the Poem of Human Redemption” as he contemplates the life of Bl. Bartolo Longo and introduces the various aspects of the Rosary Prayer. See:
