Fr. Elias’s 'true scapular miracle story’ continues this ongoing catechesis featured by the Rosary Hour Podcast, a conversation that began in May 2023.3
In this “back-to-school podcast”, our guest notes how the devotion to the Rosary and the Scapular devotion are two ways to live out the message of Fátima, which he explains in light of the sixth apparition of the Miracle of the Sun, Oct. 13, 1917 when Our Lady appeared as Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The latter was explained by Venerable Lucia explained in an interview, saying that Our Lady of Fátima wants everyone (as Fr. Elias notes) to wear the Brown Scapular.
Also, Fr. Elias explains Our Lady’s choice of ST. SIMON STOCK as an Apostle of the Scapular: he also explores the “First Saturday Promise” by using specific examples from the lives of St. Pope John Paul II, and others to explain the often unknown concept of ‘the Sabbatine Privilege’.
August 28 to Sept. 5, 1994 marks the anniversary of the period in which Fr. Elias took a 5-day retreat to Lourdes to pray for his father’s conversion. Also, he reflects on the importance of September 15 which is also the anniversary of his father’s passing.
In this Scapular Miracle Live Record Story, Fr. Elias explores why Our Lady of Fátima invited all of God’s children, through her apparitions in Portugal, to wear the Brown Scapular faithfully along with the urgent task of praying the Rosary every day.
WHO IS FR. ELIAS?
ABOUT TODAY’S GUEST: Father Elias Mary Mills, F.I. started discerning a religious vocation before graduating from Kearney State College. Attending Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut, he was introduced to the Franciscans of the Immaculate, and would join the religious order in 1993. Fr. Elias, as a deacon, served in the sacristy of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. He made his final profession of vows in 1999. During the Jubilee Year 2000, Father Elias was ordained a priest by Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz in Lincoln. In December 2016 - August 2021, Fr. Elias served at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin as Rector of the Shrine Church. His passion and love for Our Lady is undaunted, as can be seen and heard in his many retreat talks and homilies, many of which are available on YouTube and on various podcasts.
As a missionary priest, Father Elias has had many travels promoting devotion to Our Lady in Australia, Italy and across the United States.

PREPARING FOR THE FEAST OF HOLY NAME OF MARY: SEPTEMBER 12
In this podcast, Fr. Elias mentions the 12th of September. What is this day all about?
Well, next week, we celebrate the feast of the Holy Name of Mary because Pope Innocent XI added this day to the General Roman Calendar of the Catholic Church. Why? This important moment commemorates the victory in the Battle of Vienna one year prior to the Pope’s institution of this memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This important battle was recorded in history as having occurred from July 17 (the day after the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, ironically) through Sept. 11 (the day we recall the siege on the Twin Towers in New York, USA in 2001). The battle of Vienna thus ended on Sept. 12 in 1683 through the intercession of Our Lady.
Father Chris Alar, MIC, discusses the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary and King Jan Sobieski's victory as the top / significant event in the Holy Catholic Church. As they charged down the hill, every soldier shouted the name of Mary: Our Lady of Czestochowa.
PIUS XII inspires how we might approach any Marian feast as we also reflect the most Holy name of Mary:
“Let her churches be thronged by the faithful, her feast-days honoured ; may the beads of the Rosary be in the hands of all; may Christians gather, in small numbers and large, to sing her praises in churches, in homes, in hospitals, in prisons. May Mary's name be held in highest reverence, a name sweeter than honey and more precious than jewels; may none utter blasphemous words, the sign of a defiled soul, against that name graced with such dignity and revered for its motherly goodness; let no one be so bold as to speak a syllable which lacks the respect due to her name.”
AND let us pray:
“May the powerful Queen of creation, whose radiant glance banishes storms and tempests and brings back cloudless skies, look upon these her innocent and tormented children with eyes of mercy; may the Virgin, who is able to subdue violence beneath her foot, grant to them that they may soon enjoy the rightful freedom to practice their religion openly, so that, while serving the cause of the Gospel, they may also contribute to the strength and progress of nations by their harmonious cooperation, by the practice of extraordinary virtues which are a glowing example in the midst of bitter trials.”7

In a miraculous way, the unexpected event of Fr. Elias’s father in his wearing of the Brown Scapular has, 30 years later, in September 2024, brought the story of Our Lady’s Sabbatine promise & the power of Marian consecration to so many souls through this little online prayer group. We are so thankful for this testimony and for the Spiritual Direction of Fr. Elias Mills since December 8th, 2023.
To those listening and we invite you to take a moment to pray for one another, for the families, friends and relations of those reading this post, and for all in need of prayer, forgotten, alone, abandoned, exiled, and sometimes with no one to pray for them.

These 30 days don’t have to be juxtaposed. You can spread out this goal for times when you can make it to a chapel or Church where you can pray in silence, or offer a Rosary with others.

This part of our Live Record was recorded in 2024 during a Spiritual Direction Session when our team had so many unanswered questions. Fr. Elias Mary Mills (FI) responses transformed into today’s post and filled in some of the gaps from our previous December talk.
We were reminded that a priest must install the scapular and that to obtain the promise of the Sabbatine Privilege obtained by those who wear the Scapular devoutly — which is, the “sign of a consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary” — we wondered if all who wear the scapular are called to wear it continuously… as St. Pope John Paul did since he was 10-years-old, etc.
OTHER RELEVANT FOOTNOTES TO REVIEW AND INTERNALIZE
“ON HOW TO LIVE THE DEVOTION OF THE BROWN SCAPULAR”
Also, Fr. Elias did clarify that those who wear the scapular continuously are asked to commit to ONE of the following concrete practices:
One can pray the Divine Office every day;
OR
One can pray the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary every day;
OR
One can abstain from meat on Wednesdays and Fridays every week;
OR
One can pray the Holy Rosary every day (with the permission of a Holy Priest: ask either one’s confessor or Spiritual Director).
Finally, those called by Our Lady to wear the Brown Scapular shall observe a life of chastity according to one’s State in life.
In so doing these steps, Our Lady will help all those clothed in her garment to be in the State of grace at the moment of death which Fr. Elias explains is called: “Final Perseverance”.
In that sense, we now know why Our Lady wants us habitually to wear the Scapular with the goal of striving to wear it always until the moment of death.
And since we do not know that day or hour, this devotion requires great confidence and trust that Our Lady will keep her Promise so long as we are true to our devotional practice.
FINAL RHP NOTES:
“SEVEN SCAPULAR MYTHS ON THE SCAPULAR DEBUNKED!”
LESSONS WE LEARNED FROM REV. FATHER ELIAS MARY MILLS, FI
Seven myths about the scapular, the habit of Our Lady, that we discovered arose when we asked Fr. Elias — to fill in some of the gaps in our knowledge:
SCAPULAR MYTH #1: “I don’t have to wear the scapular continuously. I can simply carry it in a nice pouch or in a box in my purse as long as I keep it on my person at all times.”
FALSE: This belief is a myth and many of our team on the RHP didn’t realize!
Fr. Elias Mary Mills explained that all who wish to obtain the “Sabbatine Privilege” are called to wear the scapular around the neck, one part in the front, and one part in the back and to strive to wear this habit of Our Lady continuously.
SYMBOLISM: This act of the will is a symbol of one’s ‘Act of Consecration’ to Our Lady, and this explains why the scapular is also a daily silent prayer.
SCAPULAR MYTH #2: “It is a good idea to take off the scapular in the shower or when swimming so I don’t “ruin” the scapular, right?”
FALSE!
Fr. Elias suggests even wearing the scapular in the shower!
One idea we liked was his suggesting that one have a second dry scapular to swap out (if preferred) after bathing so to let the other dry.
Also, we liked the idea of also wearing the scapular continuously even when swimming!
SCAPULAR MYTH #3: “I don’t have to wear the scapular, I just need a Miraculous Medal, right!”
FALSE!
Fr. Elias explained that there is a special Scapular Medal that one can find and have blessed if you cannot wear the regular Brown Scapular made of cloth or wool. Fr. Charles shared with our team an example: one side of the medal has a picture of Jesus and the other side of the medal has the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, for instance. The medal he shared was also waterproof as was the flexible metal cord.
Fr. Elias reminded us that the Miraculous Medal given to St. Catherine Labouré in Paris, France does have its own graces attached to the daily wearing of this medal, with the constant and regular prayer: “O Mary Conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee” which we can add to every decade of the Rosary. (We mentioned in an earlier post that Fr. Nuno Rocha’s Rosary in Portugal, which is modelled on the Rosary recited in Fátima at the Chapel of the Apparitions, includes this prayer every decade). Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle talks about this Sacramental here: learn about the Miraculous Medal, another devotion that is, however, not the same as the Brown Scapular devotion.
SCAPULAR MYTH #4: “I can just buy any scapular from a store, have it blessed and wear it and there you go! I don’t really need a priest to install the scapular, right?”
FALSE!
Fr. Elias reminds that those who wish to be inscribed in the scapular devotion must approach a Holy Priest, when he is available, to ask him please to bless the scapular AND also to install the scapular using the sample inscription he recommends. See the English and the Latin options from our previous post as well as ideas on inviting the community to do this on a specific day by invitation to sign-up prior to the mass in which this devotion would be introduced (for example):
SCAPULAR MYTH #5: “I can only install the scapular on July 16th, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel — and I have to wait again one year from now to do this again, right?”
FALSE!
Fr. Elias reminds that one can ask a Holy Priest to install the scapular anytime of year! Since Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared during the apparition at Fátima, an historical event that occurred on the 13th of the Month… the 13th of the Month, is a very good day to install the scapular, as is perhaps any First Saturday or special Feast of Our Lady like Sept. 12 (The Holy Name of Mary) or Sept. 15 (Our Lady of Sorrows), or Oct. 7, Our Lady of the Rosary, or Oct. 11 (The Motherhood of Mary) or Oct. 13 (The Memorial of the 6th apparition at Fátima: The Miracle of the Sun), December 8 (The Immaculate Conception) etc.
NOTE: First Communicants, those preparing for the sacraments of Confirmation or Marriage, can perhaps be invited to partake in this devotion once they have learned more about the Scapular and about its story. Seminarians too.
SCAPULAR MYTH #6: “The scapular has to have a picture of Jesus / the Blessed Virgin Mary, right?”
FALSE!
The scapular can be two pieces of cloth attached with string and can be worn on the front and back of your shoulders, and this can even be handmade, Fr. Elias explains! Thus, there is no need to have pictures! A scapular can even be sewn, blessed, then worn as a bigger garment — and in colder places in the world, one can even wear the scapular as a piece of clothing as did St. Simon Stock, and many others!
SCAPULAR MYTH #7: “St. Simon Stock’s witness is legendary. But it’s a myth, right? Like, how could we know today, 700+ years later, that he was truly given the scapular promise by Our Lady?’

NOTE: This isn’t a myth, but a question that we had — i.e. what happens when you no longer need your old scapular due to it being torn, or it falling apart, and do you need a new Scapular?
Fr. Charles Nahm reminded us yesterday that we can simply bury the scapular under the earth, (perhaps near one’s garden). Fr. Elias also explains that one can simply replace the old scapular with a new one — and there is no need to have the new one blessed if the proper ceremony was conducted by a Holy Priest as outlined above.
